The Joan Jett Story
Joan Jett is a trailblazer and musical icon who grew up in a world that told her girls don’t play rock ‘n roll. So, of course, Jett rebelled and went on to smash every stereotype, glass ceiling, and slammed door in rock ‘n roll. She co-founded the all-female rock band The Runways while just a teenager. Jett later formed Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, started her own record label Blackheart Records (after 20+ labels turned her down), became a multi-platinum selling artist, and earned the title Godmother of Punk. Later dubbed the Original Riot Grrrl, Jett produced bands like Bikini Kill– with many from the movement crediting her as an inspiration. She was also the executive producer of the film The Runaways and was the main subject of the documentary Bad Reputation.
The Guitar Story
Joan Jett got word that the documentary Bad Reputation was Thea Wood’s inspiration for founding Herizon Music Foundation and its podcast “Backstage Chats with Women in Music.” In the spirit of uplifting the next generation of women in music, Jett signed this Epiphone SG electric guitar. The autograph reads, “Thanks for supporting Backstage Chats! Rock this sucker! Love, Joan Jett” Blackheart Records provided a letter of authenticity, including some cool swag — a tote bag, t-shirt (mens large), a copy of Joan Jett & The Blackhearts “Greatest Hits” CD, and some guitar picks.
The Finer Details. The guitar is signed on the body with a metallic Sharpie for staying power. That little smudge on the signature is probably from Joan’s arm– she is left handed. The guitar was originally slated for auction at SXSW 2020, which was cancelled due to the pandemic. After that, it was scheduled for auction at a Joan Jett concert, again cancelled due to the pandemic.
